I too have seen some very odd practices when it comes to handling of sharps; re-capping, picking up dirty needles out of a kidney dish to dispose into sharps and even someone putting their hand into an almost full sharps bin in order to put another needle in. I don't know about everyone else but needle stick injuries frighten the life out of me and so I am over vigilant when dealing with needles. And I pass on this hyper vigilance to others wherever I see carelessness with sharps. I fully support new technologies of retractable needles and needle covers and hope that my hospital catches on to the benefits of added protection for healthcare workers.
