Fly Spray Chaser

Here’s a bizaro experience that happened to me recently: A patient presented to hospital after spraying an entire can of flyspray into their mouth…

I’m not entirely sure what they were trying to achieve, but needless to say that flyspray in particular can actually do you a bit of damage. Some flysprays contain organophosphate material, and this particular patient ended up in intensive care.

Lesson? Fly spray is for flies. Not people.

Slapped in the Face

Ok so here’s one of my experiences of being slapped in the face at work (yes, it’s happened more than once!)

Being fairly new to nursing (I think 1 or 2 months in) I was called to a patient’s room by staff who were having some difficulty with an Alzheimer’s patient.

At the entrance to the room, some of the nurses informed me that the patient was agitated because she did not think that her medication orders came from her doctor, and was quite disorientated & starting to yell. In particular, she was repeatedly telling the girls to “go on, get out of here!”

The theory put forth to me was that this lady would respond really well to a male’s presence, and having girl nurses around was fueling the situation.

As I entered the room some bright spark said to the lady “here’s your doctor now, it’s all ok.” My de-escalation skills at this stage were completely non-existent, so I strode on up close to the lady and said (in my nicest voice) “oh hello there”.

The lady didn’t say a single word. Before I could blink she hammered my face with an almight SLAP! which, by the way, not only took me by surprise but showed me that some oldies can sure pack a wallop!

Ahhhh… good times…..
